5 Ingredient Homemade Tanning Oil

Since I left my small house on the seaside at the end of September last year, I’ve been dreaming of hot summer days. I have a deep connection with the sea. I spent my teen years at the seaside, having fun with my friends on the beach all day. I didn’t care much about the sun’s danger; I wanted a beautiful tan to look cool. One activity I still love in the summer is soaking up the sun.

In my 20s, I tended to overexpose myself to the sun, which resulted in dry skin. So, this year, I’d like to implement a few skincare routines to help support my skin. If I’m going to tan, I want to avoid using harmful ingredients, so I made this homemade tanning oil. The sun has many benefits for our health, as it’s the best way to naturally improve our vitamin D levels. That’s why I made this super easy tanning oil recipe and can’t wait to share it with you.

Making my own homemade tanning oil took me a while. I spent the last eight months researching how to create the ultimate natural tanning oil and ended up with this simple recipe. You won’t find any fluffy and ineffective ingredients.

Tanning Oil Recipe Notes and Top Tips

Best tanning oils that are natural sun protective:

  • raspberry seed oil (SPF 25+)
  • carrot seed oil (SPF 35+)
  • avocado oil (SPF 15)
  • olive oil (SPF 8)

Tanning oil doesn’t protect from sunburns. You need to use an SPF or cover up with appropriate clothing to protect your skin from sunburn.

For best results, use your suntan oil within a year. You can save any leftovers for next summer, as the ingredients have a long shelf life.

Applying essential oils to your skin while tanning can be dangerous, so they should not be used in suntan oil. Essential oils break down rapidly under direct sunlight, creating oxidation products that can damage the skin and make sunburn more likely.
