Easy Homemade Rose Lotion Recipe

I love making my natural skincare, and this rose lotion recipe is one of my favorites.

I’ve always wanted to create a simple and luxurious rose lotion recipe. I made this DIY natural rose body cream as a gift for my mom. She loves all things roses and flowers.

The DIY rose water lotion recipe is made with all-natural ingredients to keep your skin silky smooth.

Rose water has antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties that may tone and hydrate the skin. Lathering up in this body lotion will help tighten the skin and moisturize dry, cracking skin.

This rose water body lotion is lightweight, non-greasy, and absorbs fast.

What is a body lotion?

The body lotion is a formulation used all over the body. The body lotion is mainly made with water and some oil. It’s a great moisturizer that soothes and smoothers out the skin.

Making a body lotion at home is so much easier than you think. Since oil and water don’t mix well, we need an emulsifying agent to hold them together.

You only need three essential ingredients: a carrier oil (like jojoba, coconut, almond, etc.), a liquid (rosewater, lavender water, aloe), and wax to hold it together. Of course, you can chuck in some optional add-ons if you’re feeling fancy—scan all the possibilities with these five recipes below:

Basic all-natural lotion recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup jojoba oil (or other carrier oil of choice)
  • 1/2 cup rose water (or lavender water, aloe, distilled water)
  • 1 Tbsp beeswax or wax of choice (I use Olivem 900)

Optional: 1 Tbsp. Shea butter (to make it extra nourishing), 1 tsp. Vitamin E or rosemary extract, and 10 to 15 drops of essential oil of your choice.

Directions:

  1. Place the wax, carrier oil, and shea butter (if using) in a heatproof glass measuring cup or Mason jar.
  2. Make a double boiler by heating several inches of water inside a small pot. Lower the water to a simmer and put the glass bowl or cup inside the boils.
  3. Stir the ingredients with a spoon until thoroughly melted, then remove the cup from the heat.
  4. Pour ingredients into a small glass or metal bowl and wait until it cools to room temperature.
  5. Slowly add your liquid (aloe, water, or hydrosol) and other optional ingredients while mixing with an immersion blender. (If you don’t have an immersion blender, pour the ingredients into your standing blender instead of a bowl and slowly add the ingredients while blending on low.)
  6. Blend the mixture until you reach a creamy consistency.
  7. Scoop into a glass jar with a lid and keep in the fridge for up to one month.

Benefits of body lotion

The body lotion has a lot of benefits for the skin. The main benefit of a homemade body lotion is to moisturize and hydrate the skin.

DIY lotion also helps to smooth and soften, as well as to restore and protect the skin.

Another benefit of making homemade lotion is controlling and customizing the ingredients.

Why is this important? Many skincare products contain silicones, making your skin feel smooth without helping. On the contrary, silicones can cause acne and skin congestion and dehydrate the skin, resulting in dull, dry skin.

The beautiful benefits of roses for your skin

Roses have the natural prowess of hydrating dry skin while offering gentle toning and soothing benefits, making them a valuable addition to your skincare routine. From cleansing and rejuvenation to enhancing product absorption and leaving a delicate, natural fragrance, roses promise a holistic skincare experience.

Gentle exfoliation: Roses are full of natural sugars and oils that help to keep your skin moisturized, smooth and soft.

Hydration and Moisture Lock: Rose petals are rich in natural oils that help retain skin moisture, making them the perfect ingredient for people with dry or sensitive skin, leaving them with a soft and supple complexion.

Anti-inflammation: Roses are famous for their anti-inflammatory properties. That makes them ideal for soothing irritated skin and reducing redness.

Anti-ageing: Incorporating rose into your skincare routine can diminish fine lines and wrinkles, unveiling a more youthful complexion.

Skin tone and brightening: Rose possesses the magic to improve skin tone and radiance. They can fade dark spots and blemishes, granting you a uniform, glowing skin tone.

Skin tightening and toning: Roses possess inherent astringency, facilitating skin tightening and toning.

How to make rose lotion at home

There are lots of ways you can make your lotion at home.

If you want an even easier solution, make these easy lotion bars! It only has three ingredients, takes less time, and lasts longer.

Every lotion consists of 3 phases:

  • Water phase = water-solvable ingredients (rose water, glycerin)
  • Oil phase = oil-soluble materials (rose-infused oil, mango butter, babassu oil, Olivem)
  • Cooling phase = heat-sensitive materials (rose absolute, preservative, vitamin E, and provitamin 5)

What do I need to make a rose body lotion?

Ingredients:

  • Rose water
  • Vegetable glycerin
  • Rose infused oil
  • Babassu oil
  • Shea butter
  • Wax emulsifier
  • Preservative
  • Vitamin E oil
  • Essential oils (optional)
  • pink mica (optional)

Tools:

  • Double boiler or a saucepan with a glass bowl
  • Digital Scale
  • Mixing bowl or half-gallon mason jar
  • Immersion blender
  • Kitchen thermometer
  • Storage jars, wide-mouth mason jars with airtight lids, or you can use a lotion dispenser with a pump.

Start measuring your fats with a digital scale and adding them to a double boiler. I use 1.3 cups rose-infused oil, 2 Tbsp Babassu oil, and 1 Tbsp Shea butter.

Add in the emulsifier wax. Once the wax is melted, remove the pot from the heat.

While the ingredients are melting, add the liquid to a half-gallon mason jar. Place the mason jar in warm water to warm it up slightly. I am using 1 cup of rose water and 1/f Tbsp vegetable glycerin.

Place a stick blender in the water phase and blend to create a vortex.

Slowly pour in the oil phase while mixing constantly. Keep blending until the two phases are combined and a homogenous emulsion has formed.  It will be thick and creamy. This process takes approximately 3 to 5 minutes.

If you want to tint the lotion (as I did), add a small amount of pink mica and give the mixture one last blend until mixed in. This step is optional. Without a colourant, the lotion will appear white.

Using a kitchen thermometer, check that the ingredients are below 140 degrees before going on to the next step.

Add in the preservative, vitamin E oil, and rose absolute. Blend for an additional minute. Let the lotion cool to room temperature.

Pour lotion into storage containers.

Ingredients for homemade natural rose lotion

Rose water

Rose water or rose hydrosol is a beautiful addition to homemade body lotion. Floral water has antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties that may tone and hydrate the skin.

You can replace rose water with another floral or distilled water.

Rose infused oil

You can make your rose infusion at home or buy a pre-made rose oil. Making your herbal oil infusion is easy. You will need fractionated coconut oil and dried rose petals:

Add the coconut oil/squalane oil and dried rose petals into a heatproof jar or bowl and warm in a water bath for 30 minutes to an hour. Heat at the lowest possible temperature to avoid burning the oils or flowers, and add more water if necessary.

Strain the oil through a coffee filter or a fine-mesh tea infuser to remove the solids and discard the petals.

Allow the oil to cool before proceeding with the rest of the recipe.

Use fractionated coconut, jojoba, or squalane oil if you can’t find rose-infused oil.

Shea butter

Shea butter is an actual wonder ingredient. Shea butter has been used in beauty treatments for decades – and with good reason. Shea butter is included in many moisturizers, as it is an emollient to soften and hydrate the skin. Shea butter also stimulates collagen production, making it a ‘must-have’ ingredient for rejuvenating mature skin and reducing fine lines.

Babassu oil

Babassu oil is extracted from the kernels of the babassu tree, which is found in South America. This oil is known for its many benefits for the skin, including moisturizing, protecting, and healing. The oil is also rich in saturated fatty acids that are nourishing and moisturizing, similar to coconut oil. But unlike coconut oil, babassu oil is lightweight and won’t feel greasy on the skin.

Olivem 900

An emulsifier will successfully combine the water and oil phases. I use Olivem 900 as the emulsifying agent. Olivem 900 is derived from olives and looks like ivory wax flakes. The product lends a pleasant viscosity and gives the homemade body lotion a light, silky touch.

The emulsifier reduces transdermal water loss, provides long-term moisturization, and increases wash-off resistance.

Instead of Olivem 900, the vegan lotion recipe can also be formulated with Olivem 1000. Olivem 1000 is more widely available. To improve stability, add stearic acid or emulsifying wax as a co-emulsifier.

Preservative

You don’t need a preservative if you plan to use the lotion within one week. However, because this recipe contains goat milk and water, it is essential to add a preservative if you plan to make a large batch and use it for a while.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a natural antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals while helping moisturize and soften the skin.

Essential oils (optional)

You can add essential oils to your whipped mango body butter, and I highly recommend it! Essential oils greatly benefit the skin and make it smell amazing.

I love adding rose essential oil to any skincare product because of its incredible benefits for the skin. Rose can reduce signs of aging, improve skin imperfections, and keep the skin clean and purified.

Try one of the following ideas for this rose water lotion recipe:

  • Rose absolute – Rose absolute imparts an intoxicating scent that will lift the mood and put your mind at ease.
  • Geranium – Geranium has a rich floral scent, and the oil’s skin-balancing properties can improve the overall skin complexion.
  • Rose geranium – This EO has a more herbaceous rose smell. Rose geranium is also said to reduce bacteria, fungi, and viruses that cause skin disease and infections.

You can use this rose lotion recipe on your entire body. This homemade body lotion with rose water prevents your hands from drying out. The rich formula locks in moisture and protects the skin barrier from the elements.
