Homemade sugar scrub recipes are such a great way to get into making your own bath and body products. They are cheap, easy to make and use and only take a few minutes of prep work. But more than than, you can even use products you already have laying around the house!

Case in point, this homemade raspberry sugar scrub recipe was inspired by my favorite fruit preserves. I don’t know if you’ve ever tried this BetterGoods Raspberry, Cardamom, and Rose Fruit Spread, but OMG is it good. Good to eat and good for sugar scrub!

It might seem a little funny to use something like fruit preserves in a DIY sugar scrub recipe, but it actually makes a lot of sense if you think about it! So many sugar scrub recipes incorporate basic ingredients like fresh fruits, citrus zest, spices, and obviously the main ingredient in sugar scrub is sugar! Well, fruit preserves have both fruit and sugar… so why not?

What you’ll need to make Raspberry DIY Sugar Scrub at Home

  • Raspberry Preserves
  • Oil
  • Vitamin E oil
  • Sugar
  • Essential Oils. optional
  • Colorants, optional
The supplies needed to make Raspberry Sugar Scrub: A jar, sugar, vitamin e oil, essential oils, raspberry fruit spread, and jojoba oil.

    Supplies:

  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Mixing bowl
  • Clean storage jars, mason jars

Let’s talk about Ingredients:

Raspberry Preserves: Choose a brand of preserves that are sugar and fruit, not high fructose corn syrup. Using sugar topically in a scrub like this has many benefits to your skin, the same can not be said for high fructose corn syrup.

Carrier Oil: I’ve used jojoba oil for this recipe, but other great options include olive oil, coconut oil, sweet almond oil, or avocado oil. Feel free to use your favorite or whatever you have on hand.

Sugar: Basic white sugar is my choice, but brown sugar or coconut sugar will work. Turbinado sugar should be avoided. It’s coarse texture is too harsh on skin.

Vitamin E Oil: I love adding Vitamin E oil to sugar scrubs because it’s not too expensive and adds so many benefits, but you can omit this ingredient and it it will still turn out fine.

Essential Oils: Because my preserves have rose in them, I chose to add Rose essential oil to my scrub. Other great options include lavender essential oil, sweet orange essential oil, cardamom essential oil, grapefruit essential oil, or vanilla. These will all add a sweet and pleasing fragrance to your sugar scrub, as well as additional benefits.

Colorants: I added just a pinch of rose colored mica to my scrub because I was trying to get the color to look just like a raspberry! If you want a pretty rosy color, you can also try adding a pinch of beetroot powderThough I’ve seen it often on other websites I do not recommend adding food coloring ever to anything you use on your skin.

Step By Step Instructions

In a mixing bowl, measure out the fruit preserves, oil, vitamin e oil, and any essential oils or colorants you are using.

How to Use and Store

Using your homemade scrub: In the shower or bath, apply a generous amount of the body scrub to your skin and gently massage a small amount in circular motions, then rinse with warm water. Sugar scrubs are great for exfoliating hands, feet, elbows, knees, arms and legs. But you do want to use care if you have sensitive skin. I always recommend doing a skin patch test if you are trying out a homemade bath product with ingredients you’ve never tried on your skin before.

Likewise, if you plan to make and give this sugar scrub as a gift, make sure you include an ingredient list so that the recipient can do the same!

Handy tip: Keep a small container of your raspberry scrub by the kitchen sink to help wash any food odors off your hands after cooking and to moisturize your skin after washing dishes!

Storing Homemade Sugar Scrub: While most fruit preserves contain sugar and acid which helps to keep the preserves from spoiling, for the best shelf life, you should keep this scrub in the fridge. In the fridge it will have the same shelf life as the preserves themselves.

If you choose not to store this in the fridge, place it in a cool dark place, such as a cabinet and  use it within a week or two, taking care to notice any changes in the smell or color.
