Until a few years ago, I was a person who wouldn’t mind spending a small fortune on store-bought ‘trendy’ beauty products. I used to refill my stash with different makeup products regularly, and body butters were my secret obsession. 🙂 My shelves were filled with all kinds of beauty products that I ‘needed’ for my daily beauty routine—or at least ones that I thought I really needed.

Back then, I was not concerned with reading labels; for me, quality meant expensive. My logic was simple—expensive products must be the best ones!

But in the last couple of years I started reading the labels. Not in an obsessive way, but in a   ‘I want to know what I use on my body‘ kind of way. It was like waking up from a bad dream, only to realize that until then, I willingly participated in gradually poisoning my skin and my body. All those nasty-unpronounceable-filled-with-chemicals ingredients I found on the back on my beauty products terrified me, and I knew that some major changes were in order!

So, I started making my own body scrub. During my natural skincare study, I discovered some amazing ingredients that could be used to create luxurious homemade beauty products, some that would easily compete with the ones found in stores.

Benefits of Lavender

If you’ve seen my DIY Lavender Lotion or Lavender Soap Recipe, you know my fixation with lavender stems from its many skincare benefits.

According to Medical News Today, lavender has medicinal benefits in treating anxiety, hair loss, and fungal infections, to name a few. In my experience, lavender has the unique ability to create a sense of calm and relaxation. Nothing helps me get to sleep better!

DIY lavender scrub with essential oils

Lavender Sugar Scrub Recipe Ingredients

  • Granulated white sugar
  • Coconut Oil
  • Lavender Essential Oil
  • Dried Lavender Buds (optional)
  • Purple Mica (optional)
  • Mason Jar or similar glass container
  • You can use almond or olive oil as a substitute, though the colour and scent of the sugar scrub may change based on the oil base you choose. You can also experiment with making a brown sugar scrub instead of white sugar.

Homemade Lavender Sugar Scrub Notes

Ingredients Ratio

For this lavender sugar scrub recipe, you can vary the sugar-to-coconut-oil ratio depending on your preference. I started with about 200g of sugar and added 70 ml of coconut oil, but you can increase the sugar for a thicker consistency or add more coconut oil as necessary.

This DIY body scrub will leave your dry skin feeling silky smooth. The sugar and dried lavender buds in this recipe ensure the scrub exfoliates and moisturises as you rub it on your skin.

Tip: Increase the sugar and lavender buds ratio to coconut oil for more exfoliation.

I always like to give my scrubs a hint of color with mica powder for visual appeal. This is optional, however. Just a pinch of purple mica creates this lovely dusty lavender purple. If you’re worried about your towels staining, have no fear—I promise they won’t stain. I have white towels, and I’ve never seen a trace of color on any of our towels after using my scrubs.

Coconut oil provides incredible hydration for the skin. I recommend using refined coconut oil because it doesn’t smell coconut, but that’s up to you.

I use dried lavender buds and essential oil to create that heavenly lavender scent. Dried lavender buds are easy to find and affordable.  Craft stores usually sell them in the soap-making aisle, or you can buy a huge food-grade bag from Amazon like I did.  You can also dry your buds if you’re up for it.

Another tip:  You can always run the dried lavender buds through a mini food processor or crush them by hand.  This allows 99% of the lavender buds to go down the drain easily.

How to Use Your Scrub

This DIY lavender sugar scrub recipe can be used on the face, hands, feet, or body.

I particularly like to use this to remove dead skin or calluses on my feet or to soothe my hands after a long day.

After applying your scrub, rinse in warm water to remove any excess sugar or lavender pieces.

If you plan on using this as a DIY body scrub, you should increase your batch size by doubling or tripling this recipe. While I used 8-ounce wide-mouth mason jars in my tutorial, any glass jar will work.

Be aware of any allergies to coconut or lavender before gifting this to someone. (I always like to include an ingredient list on products like this, just to play it safe.)

Additional notes:

Always be aware of any food or skin allergies when gifting this DIY lavender body scrub to others. You can substitute other ingredients as necessary to accommodate dietary/health restrictions. Store the DIY lavender body scrub in a cool, dry place for up to six months.

Since coconut oil typically comes in solid form, you’ll need to pre-heat the oil in a microwave (about 30 seconds, in 10-second intervals) and keep it at room temperature before mixing it with the remaining ingredients.
