Make this DIY sugar scrub part of your morning shower. The minty scent is revitalizing and will help you wake up!

Two of my most popular sugar scrub recipes are lavender sugar scrub and lemon body scrub. These are great scents for the summer but not necessarily ones you’d use year-round (though you totally could!).

When I started my herb garden years ago,I did it with a few varieties of mint. It’s easy to grow, “impossible to kill” and requires a lot of water during hot months. Every autumn I have so much mint, I give away to family and friends, and keep the rest for cooking and min tea for happy tummy.

One day, I found an ad for mint sugar scrubs ranging in price from $8 to $32. Seriously? As much mint as I have? “I can make this for a couple of bucks!” I thought. And so can you. Here’s how to make an easy DIY mint sugar scrub with lime and coconut oil.

You only need a few simple ingredients to make a basic sugar scrub: your oil of choice (I used coconut), sugar, and an oil extract to scent your scrub. I added some mint essential oil, fresh mint leaves, zest of half lime and a few drops of lime essential oil to give it that lovely minty-green look. I just adore the colour mint green!

Benefits of Mint

A DIY mint scrub provides a cooling sensation and can soothe dry, itchy skin. According to Healthline, its antimicrobial and anti-fungal properties make mint a handy ingredient for acne-prone skin. Mint oil is also known to control excess oils and prevent clogged pores.

DIY Mint Body Scrub Ingredients

  • Granulated white sugar
  • Coconut oil
  • Mint essential oil
  • Lime essential oil
  • Fresh mint leaves
  • zest of a half lime
  • Mason Jar or similar glass containers

You can use almond or olive oil as a substitute, though the colour and scent of the sugar scrub may change based on the oil base you choose. You can also experiment with making a brown sugar scrub instead of white sugar.

Homemade Mint Sugar Scrub Recipe Notes

Ingredients Ratio

For this mint sugar scrub recipe, you can vary the sugar-to-coconut-oil ratio depending on your preference. I started with about 200g of sugar and added 70 g of coconut oil, but you can increase the sugar for a thicker consistency or add more coconut oil as necessary.

This DIY body scrub will leave your dry skin feeling silky smooth and fresh. The sugar and fresh/dried mint leaves in this recipe ensure the scrub exfoliates and moisturises as you rub it on your skin.

Tip: Increase the sugar and mint leaves ratio to coconut oil for more exfoliation.

Coconut oil provides incredible hydration for the skin. I recommend using refined coconut oil because it doesn’t smell like coconut, but that’s up to you.

I use fresh mint leaves, lime zests and essential oils to create that heavenly, fresh, minty scent. Fresh mint leaves are easy to find and affordable.

Another tip:  You can always run the fresh/dried mint leaves through a mini food processor. This allows 99% of the mine leaves to go down the drain easily.

How to use your scrub

This DIY mint sugar scrub recipe can be used on the face, hands, feet, or body.

I particularly like to use this to remove dead skin or calluses on my feet or to soothe my hands after a long day.

After applying your scrub, rinse in warm water to remove any excess sugar or lavender pieces.

If you plan on using this as a DIY body scrub, you should increase your batch size by doubling or tripling this recipe. While I used 8-ounce wide-mouth mason jars in my tutorial, any glass jar will work.
