What causes dry, itchy skin?
There are many reasons why millions of people suffer from dry skin, especially in the winter.
Various factors, including genetics, aging, climate, and lifestyle choices, can cause dry skin. Individuals with a family history of dry skin are more likely to experience this condition. Our skin produces less oil as we age, leading to increased dryness. Cold, dry climates can also exacerbate dry skin, as can hot water, harsh soaps, and other environmental irritants.
Several causes contribute to dry, dehydrated skin. It may be one core cause or a combination of any of the following:
- Lower sebum production
- Aging skin
- Dehydration or lifestyle choices
- Overexposure to elements or drying conditions
- The primary symptoms and characteristics of dry skin include:
- Tightness and discomfort, especially after showering or bathing
- Irritation, itching, soreness, redness, and flaking
- Inflammation and/or cracked skin
- Rough or scaly patches of skin
- Fine lines and wrinkles, particularly around the eyes and mouth
- Dullness and lack of radiance

Homemade body butter for dry skin ingredients
Shea butter
Shea butter is a popular ingredient in skincare products for dry skin, as it is rich in fatty acids and vitamins that help moisturize and soothe the skin.
Shea butter is an excellent moisturizing agent that melts on contact with the skin, protects against water loss and outside weathering (sun, snow, rain, and wind), and boosts the skin’s protective layer and barrier repair function. It hydrates, moisturizes, softens, and smooths dry, dehydrated, and damaged skin.
Instead of shea butter, you could use another soft butter (e.g., mango butter). You could also swap the carrier oil (sunflower oil) and essential oil (lemongrass) for different ones.
Hemp seed oil
This oil is rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants, making it an effective ingredient for dry skin. It helps hydrate and soothe the skin while reducing inflammation and improving its health and appearance.
Essential oils
Essential oils are the best way to scent your DIY body butter for dry skin naturally. They also add to the skincare qualities of your body butter for dry and irritated skin.
I used German chamomile and vanilla for dry skin in this homemade body butter.
How to store the DIY body butter
Because this homemade body butter recipe is oily-based and natural, it may melt if stored in a warm environment. Therefore, keeping this homemade body butter for dry skin in a cool, dry place is best. Then, if the oils begin to melt by chance, you can refrigerate the butter and re-whip it.

Notes
What can I use instead of hemp seed oil?
When formulating natural skincare products for dry skin, you'll want to look for ingredients known to soothe, moisturize and hydrate the skin.
You may substitute any liquid oil in place of the hemp seed oil. However, I suggest using avocado oil. It's rich in fatty acids and vitamins A, D, and E, making it an excellent choice for nourishing and hydrating dry skin.
Can I use body butter to moisturize my face?
Since this is body butter without coconut oil, you can. The moisturizing and nourishing qualities of the shea butter and the soothing effect of the chamomile essential oil are also beneficial for the face.
How to use body lotion for dry skin?
Massage a small amount of body butter into the skin using gentle, circular motions. Wait a minute for the lotion to absorb into the skin before putting on clothes. You can use the lotion on your entire body several times daily.
If storing the lotion in a star, clean your fingers before taking out the product or use a cosmetic spatula.
