Roses are the perfect addition to your skincare!
Roses have the natural prowess of hydrating dry skin while offering gentle toning and soothing benefits, making them a valuable addition to your skincare routine. From cleansing and rejuvenation to enhancing product absorption and leaving a delicate, natural fragrance, roses promise a holistic skincare experience.
Gentle exfoliation: Roses are full of natural sugars and oils that help to keep your skin moisturized, smooth and soft.
Hydration and Moisture Lock: Rose petals are rich in natural oils that help retain skin moisture, making them the perfect ingredient for people with dry or sensitive skin, leaving them with a soft and supple complexion.
Anti-inflammation: Roses are famous for their anti-inflammatory properties. That makes them ideal for soothing irritated skin and reducing redness.
Anti-aging: Incorporating rose into your skincare routine can diminish fine lines and wrinkles, unveiling a more youthful complexion.
Skin tone and brightening: Roses can improve skin tone and radiance by fading dark spots and blemishes, granting you a uniform, glowing skin tone.
Skin tightening and toning: Roses possess inherent astringency, facilitating skin tightening and toning.

Here’s what you’ll need to make this DIY Rose Body Lotion:
Rose Water: Rose water hydrates the skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles. It also tightens the skin, giving it a firmer and more radiant look.
Vegetable glycerin: Glycerin is a humectant, a moisturizing ingredient that draws hydration from both the deeper layers of the skin and the surrounding environment into the skin’s surface.
Rose infused oil: Rose oil has a regenerative effect on skin cells, making it particularly beneficial for dry, sensitive, or aging skin.
*You can buy rose infused oil. But if you’d like, you can also make your own at home. I’ve included notes below on how to make rose infused oil. *
Babassu oil: Babassu oil is rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, helps keep skin soft and moisturized with lauric acid, and absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy residue. *Refined coconut oil is often used as a substitute for babassu oil. *
Shea butter: Shea butter is a powerhouse in skincare, known to lock in moisture. Its packed with vitamins and essential fatty acids.
Wax emulsifier: In lotions and creams it acts as an all-in-one emulsifier as well as contributing thickening.
Preservative: Prevents bacteria and mold from growing in your homemade products.
Rose Essential Oil: Rose essential oil can reduce signs of aging, improve skin imperfections, and keep the skin clean and purified.
Vitamin E oil: Vitamin E oil is added to lotion because it acts as a powerful antioxidant, helping to protect the skin from free radical damage and environmental stressors. It also moisturizes and soothes the skin, improving its texture.
Pink Mica Powder (optional): To give your rose lotion a rosy hue!
You’ll also need these supplies:
- Double boiler
- Mixing bowl
- Immersion blender
- Digital kitchen thermometer
- Storage jars, wide-mouth mason jars with airtight lids, or you can use a lotion dispenser with a pump.

Step by step instructions to make rose lotion
You should know that crafting a lotion consists of 3 phases:
- The Water phase = when we mix the water-solvable ingredients (rose water, glycerin)
- The Oil phase = when mixing the oil-soluble materials (rose-infused oil, babassu oil, shea butter, wax emulsifier)
- Cooling phase = when heat-sensitive materials are added (rose absolute, preservative, vitamin E, and provitamin 5)
Step 1: In a mixing bowl, add the rose water and the vegetable glycerin.
Step 2: Measure out the the rose infused oil, babassu oil, shea butter and wax emulsifier. Gently heat these in your double boiler until it is all melted. Remove from the heat.
Step 3: Use your immersion blender to blend the rose water and glycerin. While the blender is running, slowly add the warm melted oils. Blend continuously until the lotion is completely combined and a homogenous emulsion has formed. The lotion should be thick and creamy. This blending process will take about 3-5 minutes.
Step 4: Blend in the mica powder if you’ve decided to add colorant to your lotion. This step is completely optional. Without colorant, the lotion will be white.
Step 5: Use your digital thermometer and check the temperature of the lotion. When the ingredients are below 140 degrees, add the preservative, vitamin e oil and the rose essential oil. Blend for an additional minute.
Step 6: When the lotion has completely cooled, transfer it to storage containers of your choosing. You can use something as simple as a mason jar or pump containers.
How to use this DIY lotion with rose water
You can use this rose lotion recipe on your entire body. This homemade body lotion with rose water prevents your skin from drying out. The rich formula locks in moisture and protects the skin barrier from the elements. And since the cream consists only of non-comedogenic ingredients, you won’t have to worry about clogged pores, breakouts, or product acne.
Making DIY Rose Infused Oil
You can make your rose infusion at home or buy a pre-made rose oil. Making your herbal oil infusion is easy.
You will need fractionated coconut oil and dried rose petals:
Add 1 cup dried rose petals to a pint mason jar and then fill the jar with oil. Place a lid on the top. Warm in a water bath for 30 minutes to an hour. Heat at the lowest possible temperature to avoid burning the oils or flowers, and add more water if necessary.
Strain the oil through a coffee filter or a fine-mesh tea infuser to remove the solids and discard the petals.
Allow the oil to cool before proceeding with the rest of the recipe.

What preservative do you use? And where can you get it? Thank you!
Any DIY natural products containing water need a preservative to inhibit the growth of mould or bacteria. I chose Optiphen Plus, a natural broad-spectrum preservative, for this rose lotion recipe.
In the ingredients list you say 1/3 cup rose oil but in the instructions you say 1.3 cups and then you say 3 tablespoons babassu oil in the ingredients but the instructions say 2 tablespoons. Which is correct? Also is there a suitable substitute for babassu oil? Thanks
Thank you for pointing out the typos in this post, Iris! I have gone through and edited it for clarity and included suggestions for substitutes for the babassu oil (refined coconut oil). I hope that this helps!
